Key Features

  • Designed for the precise flattening of concave sharpening stones, this lapping tool ensures optimal sharpening surface integrity.
  • Essential for professionals seeking consistent bevel angles and optimal sharpening efficiency.
  • The set includes medium and coarse surfacing compounds; fine-grade compound is not part of the set.

Instructions for Use

  1. Soak the Sharpening Stone
Immerse the sharpening stone in water for approximately 2 to 3 minutes prior to flattening. When flattening whetstones that are not manufactured by Shapton, it is essential to ensure they are thoroughly saturated with water in advance.
  2. Mark the Surface
Draw a grid parttern on the surface to track which areas have been flattened.
  3. Prepare the Lapping Plate
Place the plate on a stable surface and evenly moisten the surface with water.
Avoid using too much water, as excess can wash away the powder.
  4. Sprinkle the Surfacing Compound
Lightly sprinkle surfacing compound in 3 to 4 spots on the lapping plate, then rub the sharpening stone in small circular motions to spread it evenly.
  5. Flatten the Sharpening Stone Surface
Position the uneven side of the sharpening stone on the lapping plate and slide it back and forth (), then diagonally (, ).
Use the entire surface of the plate during this process.
When the surface becomes sticky, add a small amount of water.
Once the motion feels smooth and light, replenish the powder.
Following this method helps ensure efficient use of the powder and delivers effective results.
When the pencil lines disappear, that area has been successfully flattened.
  6. Clean and Store
After flattening is finished, rinse the lapping plate thoroughly with water and then drain it.
While rust might form during storage, it does not compromise its usability.

Selecting the Appropriate Surfacing Compound

The final finish of the sharpening stone surface will differ based on the powder used. Please choose the powder that best matches the grit level of your stone.

  • Coarse Surfacing Compound
For stones with a grit level of #320 or lower (40 microns and above).
  • Medium Surfacing Compound
For stones between #500 and #3000 (430 microns). Use after coarse powder for heavily worn stones.
  • Fine Surfacing Compound
For stones above #4000 (less than 4 microns). Best for the final polish.

Important Notes

  • Make sure to thoroughly rinse both the lapping plate and sharpening stone when changing surfacing compounds.
  • To finish the fine-grit stones, apply a fine surfacing compound and polish the surface to a mirror finish prior to sharpening.
  • Fine powder is available for purchase separately as an optional item.

Use & Care

  • After using the lapping plate, rinse away any leftover particles with water and dry it completely to keep it in good condition.
  • Dry the lapping plate after use and only store it once it is completely moisture-free. Do not store it while it is still wet.
  • Regular cleaning is advised, with the frequency adjusted based on how often the lapping system is used.
  • Store the surfacing compounds in a moisture-free area with the lid tightly closed. Lightly shake the container before each use.
